Humanities self reflection- Basic rights
- What was the key question of this topic?
The key question of this topic was how does your issue connect to the human rights?
- In one paragraph write an answer to the question, thinking about what you have learned.
My issue which is basic rights, connects to human rights because it is one of articles in the UDHR. It is number 25 on the list, but in our class, we ranked this topic no 1. It relates to it because it is something that the world is still struggling with. There are still third world countries like Zimbabwe which the majority of the people have no food, healthcare, education or a roof to live under. It is a right because it shouldn't matter where you're from, you should deserve to have the basic rights because without these rights, you can't live, which makes the rest of the articles on the UDHR unimportant because you can't live. In the olden days, only the king and higher class people got access to basic rights, but they could later on see that it is unfair and very important. They could see that the world was not going peacefully, so they decided that everybody deserved to have these rights.
- Why do you think this topic is important?
I feel that this issue is important, because without these rights, you can’t live. It is vital to have these rights and to me, it is the most important. Like how we discussed in class we put the basic rights as our number one issue. The UDHR states that everybody is born free and equal, so everybody should be allowed to have food, water, healthcare and shelter. It shouldn’t matter where you come from or if you’re poor, everyone deserves it. They are not wants, they are needs. We all need a roof above our head, we all need food and water to survive and we all need healthcare to cure our sickness and to stay healthy. But if everyone has these rights, why are there still people living on the street and begging for money to support their family? Everybody should have a right to live.
- Which learning opportunities did I most enjoy doing? Why?
I enjoyed doing the biography because it was a topic I was most interested in which is the basic rights- food an shelter. I got to research about something I was interested in and it was quite fun. I like writing the story for my biography because writing stories is something I enjoy doing because you can use your creativity. The last part of the project was to present it in a format. I chose to present in glogster because I am familiar with using it and I like to scrapbook, so glogster is basically an online scrapbook. You can show your creativity and imagination by decorating it and making it interseting.
- Which learning opportunities did I least enjoy doing? Why?
I didn't quite enjoy doing the researching for my biography because it took quite a long time to find a story that was related to my issue. Even though food and shelter is still a major problem in the world, little of them get interviewed and share their story. I found a lot of stories about countries who were struggling, but not about an individual. Some of them had little information about the person who was being interviewed.
- What skills have I used? Include 3 examples of work that show these skills.
-I applied creativity, by using my glogster not only as a place to show my biography, but I can also decorate it, and add tags to make it more interesting- http://www.glogster.com/faqeera/basic-rights/g-6lunn90sljdake6t9e9q0a0
-I also used precise language, as you can also see in the link above in my glog. I took the information of my person in my mindnode, and shorten the story down so it can fit onto a page, while still explaining properly.
-Another skill I use was plan and research. Before I started researching, I discussed with my partner what countries we should focus on and which sub topic of the human rights issue we should be independently researching about.
- How can the learning in this topic help me in the ‘real world’?
It can help me because now I know what countries are still living in poverty and need help. I can help by donating to the charities to supply food for the poor or make fundraising events to charities that need a house or shelter to live in. I could join an after school club like habitat for humanity.
- What key idea do you think people should be aware of about this topic?
I think people should get an idea that even thought it is declared that everyone is entitled to getting these rights, there are still people who struggle with it everyday and don't get easy access. But we can help the others who are in need by participating in fundraising events or donate to those who need help. People should also know that without human rights, the world won't function properly. There were wars and riots going back then, and we should be grateful that we have these rights.

Enjoyment- :)
What targets could I set to help make progress in my learning?
Try to link them to your humanities learning and the key skills you want to develop. E.g. Try to use key terms in my answers, try to ask my own questions.
1.Improve my research skills
2.Pose and define problems
3.Apply imagination
